Cameron Ray Akers, 88, passed away on January 24, 2024 in the presence of family. He was born on October 14, 1935 in Kanawha County, West Virginia, to Golden and Heartzel Akers. Cameron graduated high school from Dupont High School and enjoyed many reunions over the years. Cameron was a loving husband to Betty (Winans) Akers for 60 years until her passing on September 17, 2020. Cameron and Betty started their family on George’s Creek Drive in West Virginia. They had two children, Sybrina Akers Ecklund who passed away March 10, 2014 and Andrew Akers of Houston, Texas. He loved his birthplace, West Virginia, and will be missed by all who knew him over his lifetime. Cameron was a dedicated father to his children and a proud Grampie to Brandi Haskins (Colorado) and Amanda Ecklund (North Carolina) and his great-grandsons Maxwell Paul and Parker Cameron Haskins (Colorado).
He worked for the railroad, a grocery store, and served in the US Marine Corps before starting his career in chemical sales with McKesson Robbins in West Virginia. He later moved his family to Florida with Industrial Chemical & Supply in the 1960s as a salesman and then Sales Manager. After the purchase of Industrial by HCI, he successfully became the General Manager. Cameron had many wonderful co-workers and friends that he cherished over the years while working and inspired many to expand their careers.
Cameron had a passion for working on old cars and boats, which he shared with his son. In 1995, he and Betty moved to Boone, North Carolina after retiring where he met Rick Norwood and continued his love of working on and restoring cars and gifting them to family members. Rick and Bonnie were a huge part of Cameron’s extended family in North Carolina.
Cameron was preceded in death by his parents, Golden and Heartzel (Pauley) Akers, his daughter Sybrina Ecklund, and his brother Charles Akers. He is survived by Andrew (Shauna) Akers, Brandi (Nick) Haskins, Amanda Ecklund, as well as grandsons Max and Parker Haskins.
Private services will be held. The family suggests memorials to charitable foundations for Alzheimer’s and Dementia, or a local animal shelter (on behalf of his beloved dog, Pippi).
