She spent her formative years in Houston, Texas, attending Wharton Elementary School, Lanier Junior High School, and San Jacinto High School. Barbara furthered her education at the University of Houston main campus.
Her professional journey led her to the Gulf Oil Company, where she met her beloved husband, John Keith. They began their life together in F.T. Worth, Texas, and Stephenville, Texas, before settling in Enid, Oklahoma, where they celebrated 67 years of marriage. In this union, they were blessed with four children: John Keith of Enid, Oklahoma; Barbie Schumacher (Keith) of Chattanooga, Tennessee; Jim Keith of Colorado Springs, Colorado; and Laura Wichert (Keith) of Houston, Texas.
Barbara was an active member of P.E.O. Chapter D.B., serving as secretary and president. She was also a dedicated member of the Garden Club and found joy in weekly bridge games. A woman of faith, Barbara was a member of St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Enid, Oklahoma. Her commitment extended beyond the congregation as she spent many years decorating the church for special occasions and holidays. Barbara also proudly served as a Girl Scout leader for several years.
Family was at the center of Barbara's world, and she cherished spending time with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Her love for travel was evident, and her home was always open to visitors, creating a warm and welcoming atmosphere filled with laughter. Barbara's contagious laughter and vibrant spirit made her the heart of any gathering.
Barbara Rome Keith is preceded in death by her parents, Gustav James Rome and Esther Sonnenberg Rome, and her sister, Shirley Benefiel. She is survived by her devoted husband, John Keith, their four children, 18 grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren. Additionally, she is survived by her two cousins, Patsy Zbitowsky of El Campo, Texas, and George Rome of Houma, Louisiana.
A funeral service will be held on Sunday, January 7, 2024 at 1:30 PM at Parkway Fellowship Church, located at 27043 FM 1093 Rd., Richmond, Texas with Pastor Mike McGown officiating.
Following the funeral, a Catholic graveside service will be held at Pilgrim's Rest Cemetery in Industry, Texas on Sunday, January 7, 2024. Barbara will be laid to rest as the fourth generation heir of the Friedrich Ernst historical cemetery. Following the burial, a bereavement gathering will occur Anthonie's Market Grill in Simonton, Texas.
Barbara Rome Keith will be dearly missed by all who had the privilege of knowing her, and her legacy of love and laughter will continue to live on in the hearts of those she touched. May she rest in eternal peace.
