Zed was born to Ruth and Sam Landers on March 6, 1940, in the town of Appleton City, Missouri. He had 12 siblings and was the little brother and best friend to Darwin. Zed graduated from Appleton City High School in 1958 where he was a star basketball and football player. He nearly lost his leg in a serious car accident that kept him from playing college football at Missouri University. In true stubborn Landers fashion, he persevered and soon started walking as if nothing ever happened.
Zed left Appleton City to serve his country, joining the Air Force. He served at bases in both Missouri and Texas. After being honorably discharged, Zed began his career in sales. And, wow, was he good at it! He owned his own auto body shop, worked in real estate and was the Avon delivery man with his wife, Carlene. He spent the last 30+ years of his life in the insurance industry as a claims adjuster.
Zed married Carlene Hash in 1972, and their “surprise” daughter Jennifer was born in 1977. He also had 3 stepchildren: Vince, Chuck and Angie whom he raised as his own. Zed was a supportive and loving husband, dad, and coach. He was passionate about baseball, football, reading, playing solitaire, keeping his lawn beautiful, and his huge Christmas light displays. He also loved to play golf and ran a bowling
league for many years.
Zed could really make you laugh and he had nicknames for just about everyone. He was kind and strong and hardworking. He selflessly provided for those he loved. He will be deeply missed by everyone who knew him.
A public celebration of life will be held on Saturday, October 5th, at Newcomer’s Sons Floral Hills Funeral Home, 7000 Blue Ridge Blvd, Kansas City, MO. Visitation is from 1-2pm followed by the memorial service at 2pm. The service will also be live-streamed. Please do not wear all black as his family wishes to celebrate his colorful, well-lived life.
Flowers can be sent to the funeral home, or in lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Zed’s name to the ASPCA.
