William J. Quinn

Bill was born July 11, 1922 in Cambridge, MA. On August 20, 1949, Bill and Katherine (Kay) Smith, were married in Watertown, MA. From this marriage were born Patricia Joan (Quinn) Wohlert of Midlothian, VA, and Steven J. Quinn of Kansas City, MO. The family traveled together for many years to Scituate, Massachusetts, where they reunited with relatives and the land-locked Quinns enjoyed the icy waters of the Atlantic.

Bill served in the U.S. Navy during World War II from l942 - 1946 with duty in the South Pacific and the Philippines as a torpedo man on island based P.T. Boats. Upon his return to the Boston area, he attended Northeastern University graduating in 1950. That same year he joined the Federal Bureau of Investigation as a Special Agent. He was initially assigned to the Bureau office in Seattle, WA where Patricia was born but worked his way back east through Wichita and Manhattan, KS before settling for good in Kansas City in 1955. He was promoted to supervisor and served for years in that capacity overseeing the organized crime squad in the Kansas City, MO office. Upon retiring from the F.B.I. in 1973 he joined United Telephone Company (the precursor to Sprint) as Security Director of its Midwest Group based in Overland Park, KS, retiring in 1986. He was then self-employed until 1994 performing investigative services for numerous area companies. In 1994 he was appointed by Gov. Mel Carnahan to the first Gaming Commission of Missouri with which he served until 1997.

In retirement, Bill and Kay became very active in the Society of Former Agents of the F.B.I., an international organization consisting of 7200 members. In 1988, he was elected National President and later served as the Chairman of the Society’s Foundation.

Bill was an avid golfer and was usually the first off the tee box at The Outlaw course at Paradise Point, Smithville , MO until his first stroke in November of 2007.

Bill and Kay traveled to a good portion of the world, including numerous visits to Ireland, the birthplace of his immigrant parents. Ever the Irishman, he was an enthusiastic storyteller and no one reveled in those stories more than Bill himself. He and Kay were long time members of St. Charles Church and active in a number of Ministries. Bill was also a member of PT Boats, Inc., promoting the part they played in World War II.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Terrence and Bridget Quinn, sister Alice Quinn, and brothers Leo and Joseph Quinn. He leaves to cherish his memory his devoted wife of 61 years, Kay, his daughter, Patricia Wohlert and her husband David of Richmond, VA; son Steve and his wife Kari of Kansas City, MO and three grandchildren; Brian Wohlert and wife Jamie of Arlington, VA; Dan Quinn and Courtney Quinn of Kansas City, MO; and sister Helen DeLacey of Waltham, MA.

Visitation will be at McGilley Antioch Chapel, 3325 NE Vivion Road, Kansas City, MO 64119 on Thursday December 16th from 6-8 PM with a Prayer Service at 7:00 PM. Mass of Christian Burial will be on Friday December 17th at 9:00 am at St. Charles Borromeo Church, 900 NE Shady Lane, Kansas City, MO, 64118.

The family would like to thank the staff and nurses at NorthCare Hospice House for the wonderful care and support Bill and the family received during the last week of life.
