William (Bill) A. Langholz, 61, passed on April 6th from a rare small intestinal cancer. Bill grew up in Wichita, KS. He received his Bachelors from Wichita State and Masters from Baker University in secondary education. His first ten years teaching was at Central Middle Magnet School in Kansas City MO before moving to Center Middle School for an additional 26 years. His commitment to the betterment of his students and support of colleagues was exemplified by his determination to continue teaching throughout his illness and related treatments.
Bill's calling was an educator and his passion was teaching history. He empowered his middle school students to make a positive impact on the future while learning from our past. He encouraged students to explore the world by leading school trips to New York City, Boston and Washington DC.
He touched more than 7,200 student lives over the course of 855,360 direct teaching hours. Outside of his classroom, one could also find him working alongside students on journalism and yearbook projects, assisting at wrestling matches and whatever school administration asked him to sponsor. No matter the situation Bill humbly demonstrated how to be reliable, trustworthy, respectful, loving and peaceful.
His dedication did not stop with students as he was a strong advocate for his colleagues as well. He welcomed and mentored new staff, student teachers, first year teachers and seasoned professionals. He was involved with the National Education Association (NEA) and the district's committees to elevate curriculum and promote educational reform. It is no surprise that his comrades became fast friends that turned into long-term, family relationships over the years.
Bill’s large family was also recipients of his inherent love and support. He is survived by his loving partner, Michael Martin, his siblings; Richard (Kim), Janice (Neal), Julie (Jon), Laura, Alice (David), Ward (Shanda) and Sarah (Warren) plus numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents Carolyne and Richard Sr. and step-mother Claudette.
Bill would want us to remember the words of George Washington, "Observe good faith and justice toward all nations. Cultivate peace and harmony with all."
Bill's family and friends request donations be made to "Bill Langholz Memorial Foundation" in his honor. This memorial fund continues his legacy through teaching grants for classroom enrichment and post-secondary scholarships directly at Center Middle School in Kansas City MO.
