She was born January 7, 1923, to Arvel and Bessie Flippin in Colorado. The family left Colorado August 30, 1923, and traveled by horse-drawn wagon to Oklahoma. When Virginia was 3, her mother passed away. The family moved to Climax Springs, Missouri. The family lived with Virginia’s paternal grandmother. Virginia graduated from Climax Springs High School in 1941. When she was 19 she earned her teaching certificate at Southwest Baptist College in Bolivar. She taught all grades outside Climax Springs in a one-room schoolhouse. Later she attended Missouri University in Columbia and majored in English. She taught in Sweet Water, Missouri, for one year. Then she moved to Kansas City and got a job at Prudential Insurance Company. While in Kansas City she met and married Don Pierce after WWII in 1946. Virginia lived in the Kansas City area the rest of her life. After her marriage, she raised her children, enjoyed her garden and flowers, and was active in her church.
Virginia had three children: Joan Flamm (Bill), Donald V. Pierce, Jr., and Angela Pierce. She also leaves three grandchildren: Spencer Flamm (Becky), Ginny Fonseca (Mark), and Alex Atkin. She leaves three great-grandchildren: Mason Dempsey, Olivia Flamm, and Joey Flamm. She was preceded in death by her husband, Donald V. Pierce, Sr., and her son, Donald V. Pierce, Jr.
A graveside service will be at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, September 26, at Mt. Moriah Cemetery, 10507 Holmes Rd., Kansas City, Missouri. There is limited seating. If you wish to be seated, please bring a lawn chair. Face coverings are required for the service.
