She is survived by her 5 children: Ken McAlpin (& Sherri), Linda Hill (& Jerry), Mike Smith (& Geri), Julie Cosentino (& John) and Diane Smith. She is also survived by 7 grandchildren: Jessica Arnson (& Alan), Kyle McAlpin (& Jade), Sarah Rene, Justin Friedl (& Jenifer), John Cosentino (& Kaela), Danten Cosentino, James Cosentino, and 9 great grandchildren, as well as 4 of her siblings: Joyce Veuleman (& Larry), Tom Ballard (& Ann), Everett Ballard and Dwight Ballard (& Doris).
Verneta graduated from Camden Point High School in 1949, 1 of 6 girls who continued to attend high school reunions for many years.
Verneta and Ed lived on Sni-A-Bar Road for over 50 years, and they shared quite a life as Ed coached Little League baseball and softball in Raytown, MO, where Verneta served as a scorekeeper, and they also managed the Eastwood Hills Pool for several years. Ed was also the Post Commander at VFW Post 1829 while Verneta served as a Lady’s Auxiliary officer.
Verneta retired from the IRS in 1991 her final employer after a career spent serving mostly as a secretary for local KC companies such as Bendix and Western Electric.
Ed passed away on December 31, 1999 at home after a valiant battle with lung cancer. Verneta continued to live on Sni-A-Bar Road until 2013, when she moved into a villa in Leawood, Kansas.
Verneta will always be remembered for her kind heart, her unconditional love of her family, and her love of the KC Royals and her beloved KC Chiefs. She will be missed by many – her family as well as her many friends.
In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation in Verneta's memory, to the Kansas City Hospice House on Wornall or the VFW Post #1829.
