Timothy Edwin Johnson, 49, of Kansas City, MO, passed away January 15, 2013 surrounded by his loving family. Visitation will be 4-7PM Sunday, January 20 at McGilley State Line Chapel, where the Rosary will be prayed at 7PM. Immediately following the Rosary there will be a “Time for Sharing.” A Mass of Christian Burial will be 11AM on Monday, January 21 at St. Peter’s Catholic Church, 815 East Meyer Blvd., Kansas City, MO. Memorial contributions may be made to Kansas City Hospice House, 12000 Wornall Road, Kansas City, MO 64145, or to Elyse Johnson’s education fund, checks payable to Community America Credit Union and sent to/care of McGilley State Line Chapel.
Tim was born May 16, 1963 in Kansas City, MO. He attended Rockhurst High School and the Loretto Academy. He received an Associate’s Degree in Culinary Arts in 1989 from the New England Culinary Institute in Montpelier, VT. Upon graduation, he and Joanie moved to San Francisco where he completed his internship with Bon Appetit. Returning to Kansas City in 1991, Tim worked as executive chef for several catering companies, then Sebree and Crestwood Galleries, which moved in 2002 and became Webster House, serving as Executive Chef until 2005. He then joined Johnson County Community College as its Executive Chef for all Dining Services as well as creating food concepts for Café Tempo and the college's catering service. Tim was a leader in the college's sustainability efforts and held a sustainability dinner and expo each year. Tim won medals at the National Association of College and University Food Service Regional Culinary Challenges in 2007 and 2008, and served as the chairman in 2011. He was well known and respected throughout the Kansas City culinary community.
Tim is survived by his wife of 26 years, Joanie Flanagan; his children, Ian and Elyse; his Mother, Joan (McWilliams) Johnson; his sisters Deborah Johnson and Sheree Johnson; his brother Jeff Johnson and wife Lucy Johnson; and his nephew Nick Johnson, niece Katie (Johnson) Smith and her husband Randy Smith. Tim is also survived by several beloved Aunts, many cousins, his slew of Flanagan in-laws and close friends. He was preceded in death by his beloved Uncles’ Mike, Larry and Terry; father, Joseph E. Johnson; and his mother and father-in-law, Marie and John Flanagan.
Tim’s passion was his love of family. He loved to laugh and dance, had an offbeat sense of humor, and a flair for the dramatic. He loved his Chiefs, good or bad, and was an unwavering Jayhawk basketball fan. He was a beloved husband, father, son, brother, uncle, friend, and mentor. He held a special place in so many people’s hearts and will be missed dearly.
