He was born on March 23, 1954 in Wuhan, China to Guoying Ye and Xiuying Zheng. He is survived by his wife, Li Qin Zhang, daughter, YuMin Ye, brother Huaqing Ye, and nephew Xianjun Ye. He was preceded in death by his parents. He graduated from Wuhan University School of Medicine (formerly, Hubei Medical College) with a Bachelor of Medicine in 1979, and earned his Doctor of Philosophy in Molecular Mechanisms of Disease from University of Chicago in 1993.
He began his academic career in 1982 in China. He held academic positions at John Hopkins University, University of Chicago, University of Missouri at Columbia, and University of Missouri - Kansas City. He was a professor, William R. Brown / Missouri Endowed Chair in Genetics and Molecular Medicine, and Chairman of Department of Biomedical and Health Informatics at University of Missouri - Kansas City.
Private viewing was held Monday, October 29, 2018 for family members and close friends only at Mt. Moriah, Newcomer and Freeman Funeral Home, 10507 Holmes Road, Kansas City, Missouri 64131.
