Shirley M. Smith, 84, Gladstone, MO, died April 20, 2013 at Liberty Hospital. Funeral services will be 10:00 AM Tuesday, April 23rd at Gashland Presbyterian Church, burial in Memorial Park Cemetery, Kansas City, MO. Visitation will be from 6-8 PM Monday at the McGilley Antioch Chapel.
Shirley was born September 4, 1928 in Kansas City’s east side and lived her early years in Overland Park, KS where she attended junior and senior schools. She graduated with honors and accomplishments. Shirley earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Washburn University, Topeka, KS, also with honors and accomplishments. Her varied career consisted of over 20 years in the broadcast industry in Kansas City, Topeka and Wichita. She also was employed by Fixtures Manufacturing Co for many years. Shirley finished her working years in the Missouri state court system in Liberty. She enjoyed traveling and through the years went to many countries. She had many friends and enjoyed belonging to groups. Shirley was a long-time member and elder of Gashland Presbyterian Church. She lived in Gladstone for over 50 years and participated in many city activities, including being elected to the City Council. Most of all she would like to be remembered as a good Christian and a good friend.
Shirley is survived by her sister, Virginia Groseclose; niece, Suzanne Buckingham and her husband, Don, Kansas City, and their daughters, Sarah, Rachel and Nicki; nephew, Paul Groseclose, Indiana, and his wife, Judy, and his children, Burke and Caitlin; and many wonderful and close friends.
