Shirley Nadine Hay

Shirley Nadine (Shoemaker) Hay, 87, passed away peacefully on June 22, 2024 in Richmond. MO. She was born December 18, 1936 in Garland, KS to Roy and Mary Shoemaker. She was a graduate of Bronaugh High School in Bronaugh, MO. Shirley married Harry Everett Hay of Arma, KS on September 5, 1954 and they had two children. She worked as a school cafeteria manager until suffering a debilitating stroke in 1985. After Harry’s death in 2002 she later married Kenneth Ethridge on October 9, 2009. She will be remembered most for her infectious laughter, teasing nature and homemade rolls.

Shirley is survived by her two children, Bernita (Mike) Spear of Richmond, MO and Ron (Deb) Hay of Bronaugh, MO, brother, Jimmie Shoemaker of Garland, KS and sister, Barb Snyder of Liberty, MO. She adored spending time with her 5 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren who lovingly referred to her as “Big Ma”.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Roy and Mary Shoemaker, brother Wilbert and both husbands, Harry and Kenneth.

Services will be held Friday, June 28. 2024 at McGilley & Sheil Funeral Home in Kansas City, MO. Friends may call at 10:00 a.m. with the service following at 11:00 a.m. Interment at Brooking Cemetery at a later date. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to Shirkey Hospice and Palliative Care, 701 Wollard Blvd, Richmond, MO 64085.
