Shirley J Fountain passed away peacefully on June 11th surrounded by her family. Shirley was born on June 7, 1932 in Kansas City, Missouri to parents Walter and Mildred Raymond. She grew up in Kansas City where she graduated from Southwest High School in 1949. She attended William Woods College and graduated from the University of Missouri in 1953 with a degree in elementary education where she was a member of Tri Delta Theta sorority. She taught kindergarten and second grade both in Los Angeles and the Kansas City area. She was a member of the Kansas City Young Matrons.
She married Robert (Bob) Fountain June 27, 1958 and they were married for 49 years prior to his death in 2005. Shirley and her best friend for over 60 years, Ann Creason, had a love of antiques and enjoyed cultivating their hobby/business with many fun filled “buying trips”.
One of the biggest joys in her life were her five grandchildren. Her training as a kindergarten teacher made her an exceptional Grandmother in every way. Shirley’s sense of humor and dramatic flair for story telling remained with her throughout her life.
Shirley is preceded in death by her parents, husband and sister Nancy Raymond McCune. She leaves her three children; daughter Amy Frye, son Mark Fountain (Betsy), and daughter Julie Fountain. She leaves five grandchildren; Reid, Emily and Libby Frye and Sam and Henry Fountain, four nieces, one nephew and their families.
Her family would like to give a special thank you to Ann Wooldridge, Ann Creason and Nancy Cope for their unwavering love and support throughout her life. Her family extends tremendous gratitude and thanks to Cheryl Robertson who stood by Shirley’s side for five years as a friend, advocate and care giver and allowed her to feel loved and cared for every day. Services will be private. In lieu of flowers the family suggests donations to Operation Breakthrough, 3039 Troost Avenue, KCMO 64109 or Wayside Waifs Animal Shelter, 3901 Martha Truman Road, KCMO 64137.
Arrangements under the direction of Mt Moriah, Newcomer & Freeman Funeral Home, Kansas City, MO.
