Roland Mayer, 84, of Leawood, KS, passed away Friday, May 11, 2012. A Funeral service will be held Wednesday, May 16th, 11:30 a.m., at McGilley State Line Chapel. Private family burial. Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m., Tuesday, May 15th at McGilley State Line Chapel. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Salvation Army, 3637 Broadway, Kansas City, MO 64111 or America Cancer Society, 1100 Pennsylvania Avenue, Kansas City, MO 64105.
Roland was born May 25, 1927 in Dnjepropetrovsk, Ukraine. He then immigrated to Germany in 1948. Roland was a prisoner of war in Russia. He was married to Ruth Pfau in 1949 in Goeppingen, Germany. In 1952, Roland immigrated to the U.S., arriving in Lawrence, Kansas with his mother. He moved and settled his family to Kansas City where they raised their three children. Roland was the founder of Best Tool & Manufacturing in 1956. He was also one of the founders of Quality Finishing & Empire Container. In 1955, he started the Germany American Citizens Association and was their president. Roland started the first machinists apprentice program in conjunction with the NTMA. He enjoyed people and gardening. Roland loved his family, which meant everything to him. He will be deeply missed by his family and all of those who have been touched by his generosity and compassion.
Roland was preceded in death by his parents, Emil and Rosa Mayer, and son Howard. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Ruth; son, Roland P. Mayer and his wife Judith of Kansas City, MO; daughter, Karin Dattel and husband Scott of Leawood, KS; and three grandchildren, Kara, Cole, and Tiffany.
