Robert Dale Van Kirk, 74, Overland Park, Kansas passed away April 21, 2014. Visitation will be from 12:00-1:00 p.m. followed by memorial services at 1:00 p.m. Tuesday, April 29, at Mt. Moriah & Freeman Funeral Home, 10507 Holmes Rd., Kansas City, Missouri.
Bob was born on June 10, 1939 in Carlsbad, New Mexico. He was the oldest son of Clifford and Ruth (Castle) Van Kirk. He grew up in Virginia, Chicago, St. Louis and Omaha. He graduated from the Municipal University of Omaha. He served in the Army as a Chaplain’s Aide at Ft. Leonard Wood, Missouri for two years and was in the reserves for four more. He moved to Kansas City to work for the USDA. Bob (or Van as his co-workers knew him) retired in 1996.
On March 3, 1990, he married Sharon Brier. Bob and Sharon loved to travel and could be found at square dance conventions, quilt shops, and taking photos at zoos and National Parks. After Sharon’s death, Bob gave up square dancing and went back to bowling. He bowled in several leagues each week. He loved to watch the Royals, Nebraska football and KU basketball.
Bob will be missed by his daughters, Susan Van Kirk Beyer and husband Gene, and Robyn Morrow and husband James, his six grandsons, Ian, Caleb, Aidan, Jonas, Quinn and Colin, and his brother and sister-in-law, John and Cheryl Van Kirk, and extended family.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, Tennessee 38105.
