Robert C. Baskin, 93, Kansas City, MO, beloved father, grandfather and friend, passed away on June 29, 2014, at Kansas City Hospice House. He was born August 8, 1920, and grew up in the small sand hills town of Stapleton, NE, the son of William M. "Bill" Baskin and Etta Fern (Batie) Baskin. Bob attended Hastings College in Nebraska, where he met Barbara Jenkins, whom he married September 9, 1943 in a ceremony officiated by the Reverend Peter Marshall in Washington D. C., prior to his Air Force service in WWII.
Bob studied meteorology at the University of Nebraska and the University of Chicago, and worked at the U.S. Weather Bureau for 33 years, retiring as Director, G.S.-17. Retirement led to a second career as a master woodworker and woodcarver, producing many beautiful creations as a testament to his talent.
Bob was extremely active in Boy Scouts, attending several national Jamborees and achieving the prestigious Wood Badge and Silver Beaver awards. He was also dedicated to and served as an elder and general handyman at John Knox Kirk Presbyterian Church.
Bob is survived by his three children, William N. Baskin, MD, (Leah), Rockford, IL; Jean Zimmerman (Tom and children Alisa and Charlie), St. Louis, MO; and Jane McCall, Kansas City, MO. Jane, together with Marge Sprague, spent the last nine years as caregivers for Bob. Bob was predeceased by his parents (and his wife Barbara).
Visitation will be at 2:00 p.m., Memorial Service at 3:00 p.m., Tuesday, July 8, 2014, at John Knox Presbyterian Kirk, 11430 Wornall Road, Kansas City, MO 64114.
