Ramona was born in Kansas City, Kansas on April 12th, 1934 to her parents Mildred and Clyde Davis. She attended Abbot Elementary School, Northwest Jr. High, and Wyandotte High School all in Kansas City, KS. She grew up with one sister, Joyce (Davis) Grammar, five years younger.
Ramona was an active, outgoing and especially friendly girl in high school. Many friends have expressed thanks for the way she cared for them in their teenage development years and later in their older years. She played the violin in Junior High and at Wyandotte High school under the tutelage of Mr. Shopmaker, KCK school system director of music education.
In 1952 she became acquainted with Chuck Winters a classmate who was an admirer of her outgoing cheerfulness and beauty, as well as her leadership in Sorority and school clubs. They seemed to make a perfect match, a match that lasted 70 wonderful years. They were married on August 25th, 1955 in their KCK Methodist Church.
Ramona graduated from KCK Jr. College followed by attending the University of Kansas earning a Bachelor of Arts in Education in 1958. In the years following graduation, she taught in various school systems including: elementary schools in KCK and Shawnee Mission, and a private school in Santa Monica, CA. Later, she opened her own preschool in Overland Park, KS.
Ramona bore 2 beautiful daughters, Holly Jo Winters Combest in 1962 and Karine Michele (Winters) Hellwig in 1967. As these girls grew, Ramona taught their Sunday school classes and became Youth Group Leader at Valley View United Methodist Church in Overland Park, KS.
After her girls were grown, she and Chuck assembled five of their closest friends from school into a tour group called Toni’s Tours. They traveled coast to coast over the years in their 7-passenger van. As some of them got older or infirmed, Toni took special measures to see that they were comfortable and could enjoy all the excursions.
Ramona’s legacy is in the form of numerous wonderful children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren as follows: grandchildren Andrew Combest, Shane (Jenn) Combest, Lindsey (Shannon) Humphrey, and Jacob Hellwig; great grandchildren Kylie and Archer Combest-Shen, and Luke, Christopher, and Jaqueline Humphrey. In addition she leaves behind numerous cousins in the McCarty and Winters families in the Midwest, California, and Florida.
Her husband of 67 years says a tearful goodbye to Toni and thanks her for being an Angel sent from Heaven to show him the way.
Chuck leaves this message:
“Have you ever seen an angel? Have you ever kissed an Angel? Have you ever held an Angel tight enough that your hearts beat as one? I have! Goodnight my dearest Toni.”
