Rachel was born in Kansas City, Kan. in 1938 and graduated from Savannah (Mo.) High School in 1957. She started her career as a Registered Nurse on December 1, 1959 upon receiving her diploma from St. Joseph's Hospital School of Nursing in Kansas City, and worked as an emergency room nurse, a hospital nurse, a blood bank nurse and a private duty nurse for the next 32 years.
Rachel was preceded in death by her parents, Anne V. and Anthony J. Heuertz and by her sister, Susan Unger. She leaves behind a daughter, Mary Behm-Steinberg of Berkeley, Calif.; a sister and brother-in-law, Mary Ann and Dean Gall of Lee’s Summit, Mo.; a brother, John Heuertz of Blue Springs, Mo.; nephews Dean (Anna) Gall, Ed (Ginger) Gall, Geoffrey (Michelle) Unger and Mick (Beth) Gall; five great-nephews, three great-nieces and a host of other friends, relatives and loved ones.
Rachel loved doing volunteer work; good food and good conversation; sewing, pencil sketching and playing her recorder; and doting on her extended family. She loved to read, especially romance novels. She never saw a cat she didn't like, and vice-versa.
Perhaps most important, Rachel loved the Catholic faith and lived it every day. It was a part of who she was, as much as a part of what she did. Rachel attended Mass every day that the infirmities of old age allowed, and either prayed the Rosary daily or made Rosaries with friends for Catholic missions around the world.
Rachel Heuertz lived a long life and died a peaceful and holy death. Her memorial service will be held from 6-8 pm on Friday, November 28 at McGilley & Sheil Funeral Home, 11924 E. 47th St. in Kansas City. Recitation of the Rosary will begin at 7. Mass of Christian Burial will be at St. Bernadette's church, 9020 E. 51st St. Terrace in Kansas City on Saturday morning, November 29 at 10. Interment will follow at Mt. Olivet Cemetery at 7601 Blue Ridge Blvd. in Kansas City.
We will all miss her greatly.
