Phyllis L. McBride, 90, of Kansas City, Missouri passed away peacefully on Tuesday, June 15, 2010 after a brief illness. Phyllis was born May 4, 1920 to Leatha and William Weaver. She lived in Kansas City all of her life, attended Manual Training High School, and worked for 22 years as a tax examiner for the IRS. She married the only man she ever loved, John E. “Peck” McBride on March 31, 1941. They raised four children: John, Mary, Margaret, and Barb. For 25 years, from the mid-60s, they also had a cabin at the Lake of the Ozarks. Her passion for family, fun, boating, and fishing made for exceptional memories over the years. Phyllis will always be remembered for her quiet, gentle spirit and her unconditional love for every living thing - people, animals (especially dogs), flowers, and nature’s wonders. She was a strong supporter of Wayside Waifs, Harvesters, City Union Mission, and Friend’s of Zoo, to name a few. Phyllis’ passion for reading, playing cards and other games, has been passed on to her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She loved and supported the local theatre - Quality Hill Playhouse, American Heartland, Starlight, Chestnut Fine Arts, The New Theatre, Musical Theatre Heritage (MTH). She loved to travel and try new things (never tell her ‘no‘). She had a bucket list long before the term was popular. She traveled with her family and friends whenever she could. Sanibel Island, Florida was one of her favorite destinations as she loved to comb the beaches for shells. Some of her foreign travels included Bimini, Venezuela, Canada, and the Bahamas. Just within this last year, she went to Illinois, Florida, and Hawaii. Unfortunately, she will miss the Grand Canyon trip scheduled for July - although, she’ll be there in spirit. Phyllis is preceded in death by her parents Leatha and William Weaver, her loving husband John “Peck“ McBride, her sister Catherine Lyons, and her youngest daughter Barbara L. Meyer. She is survived by her son John W. McBride, her two daughters Mary A. Stewart and Margaret J. Harzman, her three sons-in-law David M. Stewart, Kip B. Harzman, and Thomas A. Meyer, her daughter-in-law Doris V. McBride, her nine grandchildren John W. McBride, Melissa McBride, Ronald E. Harzman, Michael Stewart, Jennifer Gray, John E. McBride, Darren Meyer, Christopher Hiebert, and Thomas “Shane” McBride, and 16 great-grandchildren. Visitation will be at Mount Moriah & Freeman Funeral Home at 10507 Holmes Road in Kansas City, Missouri, Thursday, June 17, 2010 at 12:00 p.m., directly followed by a memorial service at 1:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to any of Phyllis’ charities (listed above) or to Kansas City Hospice House at 12000 Wornall, Kansas City, Missouri 64145.
