Phyllis attended Lindenwood College in St. Charles, Missouri for two years, followed by nursing school at Wesley Memorial Hospital School of Nursing, Chicago, IL, graduating in 1953.
As a military wife for twenty-six years, Phyllis traveled extensively and held various offices within the Air Force Wives Club. She also owned and operated a children’s clothing store in Trenton, Illinois known as Bo Peep Boutique.
Phyllis was recognized as a music braillist-a meticulous craft in which sheet music is transposed into braille for the blind. She was one of only seventy-five of these specialists certified by the Library of Congress, and the only one in America to do all her work by hand.
She was preceded in death by her parents Ivan and Gladys Manske, mother/father-in-law Dr. John and Alma Calvert, her daughter, Linda Calvert, and grandson Vincent Calvert.
She is survived by her spouse and best friend of more than 66 years, Ret. Col. Dr. John H. Calvert, Jr., her children Leslie Calvert and wife Sue Tharp, John I. Calvert, Steven Calvert and wife Colleen, former daughter-in-law Debby Condit Calvert, her sister Sally Schultz and husband Dr. Don, sisters-in-law Katherine Behrens and Marian Calvert, her grandchildren Jessica Calvert, Joel Calvert, John M. Calvert, Zachary Calvert, Whitney Calvert Lewis, Jennifer McGee, Robert McGee, and nine great-grandchildren.
Favorite charities: International Crane Foundation and the SPCA .
Her final resting place will be at Pierce, Nebraska. A memorial service will be held at St. Francis of Assisi in the Pines Episcopal Church, Overland Park, KS at a later date.
