Patricia Carolyn “Pat” Smith, 87, of Overland Park, Kansas, passed away Sunday, September 30, 2012. Mass of Christian Burial will be held Wednesday, October 3rd, 10:30 a.m., at St. Thomas More Catholic Church, 11822 Holmes, Kansas City, MO, with burial following in Calvary Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m., one hour prior to the mass. The family requests no flowers. Mom was born in Kansas City, Missouri on October 3, 1924 to William Faye and June Patricia (Murphy) Schlagel. She attended Annunciation Grade School and graduated from Redemptorist High School. In June, 1946, she married Bertrand L. Smith. For most of her married life, she was a homemaker. She later returned to the work force, first as a secretary/receptionist at Loretto Grade School, and later at Guardian Angels Parish. Subsequent to that she worked for Doctors Knock, Youngblood, Buckner and Zeller.
Pat was a longtime member of St. James Parish and was active in the Altar Society, PTA and Girl Scouts. Later, she was also a member of Christ the King Parish and St. Thomas More. She enjoyed volunteering for Cancer Action with friends from St. James.
Pat was preceded in death by her parents and husband Bert. She is survived by her daughter, Sharon and husband Merrill Armstrong and son, Gary Smith and wife Julie and three grandsons, Darren, Jeff (Cassie) and Terry who were a source of great pride. She is also survived by her sister, Suzanne Schlagel of Riverside, California.
The family wishes to express our thanks to the staff of Bickford of Overland Park who provided Mom with excellent and loving care for the last 11 years, and to the staff of Southern Care Hospice for doing the same the last few months of her life.
