Miss Mildred “Millie” Louise Capers was born June 12, 1941. Born in Yazoo City, Mississippi, leaving there as a young child, the family moved to Charleston, South Carolina before settling in Wichita, Kansas. Millie graduated from Wichita High School East in 1961. After graduating she relocated to Kansas City to pursue her passion in helping others, nursing. She went to the University of Kansas at Kansas City and U.M.K.C. where she received her degrees. She worked at several hospitals in the city including Research, Baptist and St. Joseph just to name a few. She was active for many years selling Mary-Kay Cosmetics, and received many awards and achievements.
Millie was a very private individual. One who never married or had any children of her own, however, she took in her nieces and nephews as her own. She enjoyed her friends, with who she took cruises with, played cards, had pot-luck dinners with and traveled all over the world. She stayed close with many friends, even after they moved to other cities and states. The year 2014 became somewhat of a struggle for Millie after being diagnosed with an illness. She had made plans to relocate back to Wichita and live her last years where she grew up during her teenage and high school years. But the illness was moving quickly through her body, Millie had been in and out of the hospital all year long with some being extended stays, the last time being middle December.
Millie left this earth January 7, 2015 to enter eternal rest. She was preceded in death by her father Willie Capers, mother Katherine Coleman Capers, and sister Dorothy D. Capers. Millie is survived by her brother Willie Capers Jr. of Los Angeles, California; sister Emma Jean Capers (Everett) of Los Angeles, California; nephew, who like her son, Willie James Capers of Wichita, Kansas, niece Kathryn E. Capers of Wichita, Kansas; five great-nephews, two great-nieces, and a host of other relatives, friends, neighbors and co-workers.
