Burch was born August 4, 1925 to Clarence Fay and Sallie Mae Mayo in the farm home at Clifton Hill, MO. Growing up on the farm with 2 older brothers, Curt and Howard, there were always many opportunities for mischief. Riding on the back of a cow, hiding in the hay loft, gathering eggs, making her own chewing gum out of fresh wheat and mint, and of course the “long walk to school!”
Burch graduated from Clifton Hill High School in 1943. After graduation she moved to Kansas City and began work at Western Auto. During WWII, she started work at the North American Bomber plant in Fairfax as a secretary. It was during this time she met her handsome husband- to-be, Wesley Lee Schuman, through mutual friends. After a six week courtship, they were married on June 1, 1946 until his death in 2012.
After positions at Glover, Sears, and Macy’s, she found her permanent employment with Tnemec Co., Inc. in North Kansas City. After 25 years there, Burch retired in 1987 and enjoyed many years traveling, bowling, cooking and entertaining (can you say banana bars)! It wasn’t a gathering unless Burch sprung a new recipe on everyone that she had never tired. This tended to make Wes a little nervous! Many shut-ins were thrilled with her generous donations of baked goods.
She was a member of Winnwood Baptist Church since 1962 and initially became the 1st woman deacon at the church.
Burch is preceded in death by her parents, 2 brothers, and husband Wes.
She is survived by her son Randy (Lauretta) of Kansas City, Missouri; daughter Sherry (Rudy) of Kansas City, Missouri; 5 grandchildren, Bobby, Danny, Natalie (Scotty), Brande (Rich), and Courtney (Brandan); 4 great grandchildren, Tyler (Sara), Bryce, Amelia and Caroline, along with numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.
