Mary attended Paseo High School. She was employed by the Kansas City Star as a proof reader. Her father, mother and brother also worked for the Kansas City Star. She met the love of her life at the Casting Club in Kansas City, Mo. Both Elbert and Mary were state champion casters.
She attended St. Mary's Girls College in Leavenworth. Elbert thought this was a perfect place for her while he was overseas serving in WWII. Upon his return, they were married on January 15, 1949 and celebrated 67 years of marriage prior to Elbert's death.
After starting a family, Mary became a full time mother and later, a grandmother a great-grandmother. She volunteered in the schools in the computer lab and classroom, at church and in helping neighbors and friends who needed transportation for medical care.
She enjoyed playing badminton and working out in various exercise classes. Elbert and Mary joined the Sylvester Powell Community Center in Mission where she became a reluctant member of the water aerobics class. However, this became a important part of her life and she developed wonderful friendships which she cherished until her death.
Her interest in computers continued her entire life. Due to her background as a proof reader at the KC Star, she became an avid reader on her Kindle and game player on her tablet. Her greatest joy was being mother, grandmother and great-grandmother and enjoyed spoiling the grandkids and great-grandkids.
Upon Elbert's passing in September of 2016, she looked forward to the day she would join him for a glass of wine and some good music.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Elbert; grandson, Brian Bolyard; and brother, James Ratchford.
She is survived by daughters Sharon (Thomas) Bolyard, Kathleen (Richard) Selig and Melissa Lewis, all of Topeka; grandchildren: Lyndsay Minor (Brad) Tindell of Topeka, Brandon Minor (Josh) Selig-Votaw of Overland Park; Jennifer Bolyard (Steven Reitmeyer) of Eudora; Eian Benton Lewis of Topeka; and great-granddaughters Ryleigh and Landry of Topeka.
The family would like to express our deepest thanks to the staff at Midland Care and McCrite for the wonderful care and treatment provided to our loved one.
