Mary Margaret Long (nee Hull), 89, passed away on October 3, 2017. Mary was born on February 19, 1928 in Crystal Lake, IL, to Margaret Gallagher Hull and Phillip Hull. She attended nursing school at the University of Minnesota. While working as head nurse in the cardiac unit at The University of Chicago, she met the love of her life and future husband, Edwin T. Long, MD. They married in 1955 and raised three children, Jennifer Long Berko, Laura Long Aractingi and Peter Edwin Long.
After bringing up their family in Florida and Pennsylvania, Mary and Ed moved to Missouri when Ed retired from medicine. Mary enjoyed tennis, attending local theater and symphony performances, gardening and volunteering as a literacy tutor. She was a talented cook, found solace in her faith and could light up a room with her energy and beautiful smile. But, before everything else, she was an amazing mother and an adored wife.
She is survived by her husband, children, their spouses, Stephen Berko, Ronald Aractingi and Ann Long, and grandchildren, Justin Berko, Brendan Berko, Caroline Berko, Olivia Aractingi, Meghan Long, Abby Long, and Matthew Long, as well as several dearly loved nephews and nieces. Her sister, Elizabeth Cabeen Barnstead, and her brother, William Hull preceded her in death.
The family would like to thank the compassionate team of care givers for their efforts to help ease some of Mary’s discomfort as her health failed and Dr. Sarah Taylor for the many years of excellent care she provided.
A memorial mass will be held at 10:00 a.m. on October 9 at Visitation Church, 5141 Main St., Kansas City, MO.
I lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to
