Mary Jo Lonergan Carney, 82, of Overland Park, Ks passed away peacefully in her sleep with her family in attendance on December 18, 2012. Mary Jo was born in Kansas City, Mo attend Redemptrist Grade School, Loretto Academy and Ursuline College of Paola. She married Paul Julian Carney Jr. May 5, 1951. She retired from Jones Store as the beauty salon receptionist in 1985. She has been an active member of Queen of the Holy Rosary Parish for 58 years, serving in the funeral choir, attending weekly Adoration, organizing the soup kitchen and organizing the Queen Marathon Bridge Group with her good friend and neighbor Phyllis Brennan for 30 years. She loved playing bridge and cherished the many friendships made with cards in her hands. She served on the Auxillary of St Joseph’s Hospital and Ladies of Charity. She was preceded in death by her husband of 52 years, Paul J Carney Jr., her infant children; James and Mary Carney, grandsons; LCpl Luke Carney Yepsen, Ryan Carney Post, her brother; Edward Lonergan, her father; Ed Lonergan, her mother; Marie Lonergan Nugent and step father; Anthony P Nugent Sr. She is survived by her children; Kathleen (Dr Charles) DuMontier of Belleville, Il, Sheila (Gary) Yepsen of Kingwood, Tx, Mike (Kathy) Carney, Maureen (Lt. Col. Ret Manuel) Hernandez of Leavenworth, Ks, Kelly (Ken) Wagner of Lee Summit, Mo, Carol (Mark) Porter of Marietta, Ga, Laura (Kevin) Jeffries, Leawood, Ks, her beloved grandchildren; Dr. Stephen DuMontier, Dr. Erin DuMontier (Xitij Rai), Caitlin DuMontier, Kyle Yepsen, Chris Carney Post, Brian (Holly) Carney, Pfc Jonathan Carney, Rachael Carney, Theresa Hernandez, Phillip Hernandez, Mark Hernandez, Joseph Hernandez, Christina Hernandez, Daniel Wagner, Melissa Wagner, Kimberly Wagner, Paul Porter, Matthew Porter, Thomas Porter, Adam Jeffries, Christy Jeffries, Sarah Jeffries and Julie Jeffries, and one great grandchild; Audrey Carney, a brother in law; James (Betty) Carney and numerous nieces and nephews. Mary Jo was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, aunt, friend, sister in law to Joan Nugent, neighbor and cousin. She touched many lives with her calm diplomacy and caring loyalty of friends and family. She enjoyed life. One could always count on her for a kind and encouraging word. She spoke often of the love she had for grade school friends, her friends from Loretto, the discussion group with Fr. Schmidt, and the Villa Medici Gang. Her children would like to thank all of her friends who gave her the spice to life that made each day a new adventure in sharing God’s love. We would also like to thank Veronica and Carrie at Davita Dialysis Center for the tender loving care you showered on our mother. A special thanks goes out to Dr Richard Huseman and his staff for living the journey of end stage renal disease to dialysis with this large Catholic family. We know we could be challenging at times but we were blessed when you entered our mother’s life to share your knowledge and concern for her health. Memorials can be made to Queen of the Holy Rosary Church.
The Rosary will be prayed Friday, Dec. 21 at 5:00 PM at McGilley State Line Chapel, with visitation to follow from 5:30-7:30 PM. Mass of Christian burial will be held Saturday, December 22nd, 10:00 a.m., at Queen of the Holy Rosary Catholic Church, 7023 West 71st Street Overland Park, Ks. Graveside services will be at Calvary Catholic Cemetery, 6901 Troost Ave, Kansas City, Mo.
