Mary Katherine Hoffman

Mary Katherine Hoffman of Oak Grove, Missouri peacefully transitioned into her next life at home on Monday, June 10th, 2024, at the age of 89. Mary Katherine Bowers Hoffman was born June 8th, 1935, in Kansas City, Missouri, daughter of Buelah Best and Floyd I Bowers. She was a lifelong resident of the Kansas City area.

Mary attended Southwest High School. Her college career included an Associates in Arts from Stephens College (Columbia, Missouri), BS in Education from Northwestern (Illinois) and a Masters Degree from UMKC.

Mary taught special reading in the Shawnee Mission School District (Primarily at Tomahawk Elementary) for 37 years before retiring. She possessed an extreme passion for reading and enjoyed sharing books with all her students. Mary was a twenty-four year cancer survivor.

In retirement, Mary cherished her time with the “Starlight Gang” and going out with her close friends in Delta Kappa Gamma Educator Sorority.

Mary spent the last 10 years living with her family which provided her great joy. She was blessed to have 2 caregivers, Glenda Jones and Tonya Bergschneider for the last 5 years. They spoiled her with daily car rides, trips to the zoo, strolls in the park, and getting her nails and hair done. Her days were always topped off with a Caramel Frappe and cheesecake bites.

She is survived by her son, William Kent Hoffman (Jennifer Hoffman) of Oak Grove, grandchildren, Clayton Hoffman (Brittney Hoffman), great-grandchildren (Avery and Theo) of Blue Springs, Alexis Hoffman and Miles Hoffman, both of Oak Grove.

In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation.

A funeral service for Mary will be held at Mt. Moriah, Newcomer & Freeman Funeral Home, 10507 Holmes Road, Kansas City, Missouri on Wednesday, June 19, 2024, at 11:30 AM.
