Mary Darlene Holmes Grimes, 80, of Raytown, Missouri, passed away Thursday, April 29, 2021. In accordance with her wishes, she was cremated. Visitation will be 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM, Saturday, May 22, 2021, at Floral Hills Funeral Home.
Darlene was born on April 13, 1941, in Neosho, Missouri, the first child and daughter of Darrel Lee Holmes and Irene (Kelso) Holmes. She was pre-deceased by her parents, and by her eldest brother Darrell Kelso Holmes. She is survived by her siblings Dee Ann Arnold, Donna Sue Harris, Dell Lee Holmes, Dalea Lynn Foraker, and David Farrell Holmes, and by her son Douglas Michael Robert Grimes.
Darlene was a graduate of Neosho (Missouri) Senior High School, and went on to attend the University of Pittsburg (Kansas) and the University of Kansas, majoring in Art. Her works there were well-received, earning her a chance to assist with a bronze sculpture chosen for inclusion in the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C. Darlene left college after her marriage to William Robert Grimes, but she joyfully remained an artist, both professionally and as a hobbyist, for the rest of her life.
Darlene's divorce from William Grimes led her to fulfilling careers as a personal secretary or office manager in several companies in Kansas, Virginia, Oklahoma, and Missouri. She ultimately retired from a position with the 16th Circuit Court of Jackson County, Missouri, in early 2010, due to medical reasons. She was diagnosed with early stage Alzheimer's, a malady she fought to the end.
In lieu of flowers or other gifts, the family requests donations be made to the Alzheimer's Association (Kansas City). https://tinyurl.com/ALZ-donate-memorial-MDGrimes or https://act.alz.org/site/TR/Events/Tributes-AlzheimersChampions?pxfid=681767&fr_id=1060&pg=fund
