Mary Jane (Bell) Clayton was born September 18, 1922 in Leavenworth, Kansas. The only child of John Riley Bell and Cora Fleshman Bell, she was raised in Leavenworth where she attended Sacred Heart School and Immaculata High School.
A graduate of Saint Mary’s College, she practiced nursing at Saint John’s Hospital in Santa Monica California; the VA Hospital in Leavenworth, and Baptist Memorial Hospital in Kansas City. She concluded her nursing career serving as the Director of Nurses at the Holmesdale Convalescent Center for 30 years.
Mary Jane married Wilson Benjamin Clayton in 1946. Together they raised three children in the Kansas City area.
She was an avid sports fan (especially the Royals and Chiefs), golfer and seamstress. She loved family gatherings, card games, children, dogs and time at the lake.
Mary Jane was preceded in death by her parents, her husband of 58 years, her son John Robert Clayton, and her granddaughter Shannon Marie Clayton. She is survived by her son Stephen Michael Clayton (wife Nancy) of Kansas City; her daughter Mary Jan Dixon (husband Greg) of Olathe, Kansas; daughter in law Teri Clayton of Georgetown, Texas, 10 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 A.M. on Monday, March 6 at Saint Thomas Moore Church, 11822 Holmes Rd., Kansas City, MO.
