Mary was preceded in death by her husband, Lloyd, in 1986, 5 brothers and 2 sisters. Mary was born in Richmond, MO on March 11, 1918 to Malta and William Chaney. She lived in Clay County, MO for many years and graduated from Excelsior Springs High School. She moved to Kansas City, MO and married her husband, Lloyd, on May 11, 1941. Mary owned her own grocery store off Swope Parkway in Kansas City and later worked at Macy’s for 20 years. She was a member of the Armour Heights Baptist Church. Her passions were gardening and sewing. She proudly displayed her quilts, pillows, bags and items at craft shows until 1998. But what we loved most was her amazing and captivating storytelling of her years growing up and her family’s heritage.
Survivors include her two sons Ronald Atkinson, Edgerton, Kansas; Mike Atkinson (JoAnn} Leawood, KS; and daughter Jeannie Stephens (Mike) Edgerton, KS; 5 grandchildren, Mike Atkinson, Gina Stringfield (Pat), Richard Winningham (Laura), Rusty Winningham, and Randy Winningham (Patti); 8 great grandchildren, Tanner and Libby Atkinson, Jackson and Chase Stringfield, Dakota Winningham, Heidi and Molly Winningham, Sarah Mayse (Josh) and six great, great grandchildren Mahala, Kora, Egypt, Aliyah, Alayna, and Octavia.
Mary was a beloved mother, grandmother, and friend who was greatly loved and will be missed by family members. A visitation will be at 10:00 am on Sunday, July 8, 2018, funeral service at 11:00 am at Mt. Moriah Funeral Home South, 10507 Holmes Rd. Burial will follow at Mt. Moriah Cemetery.
