On January 6th, 2022, Margaret Marie Mitchell, fondly know as Maggie, passed away peacefully with her family and dear friends by her side. Maggie was born on April 8th, 1948, to John Mitchell and Kathleen Aylward Mitchell in Kansas City, MO. Maggie’s dear mother passed away when Maggie was young, and John was remarried to Carol Burns Mitchell where they blended their families. Maggie was raised with her four siblings and attended Loretto Academy grade school. She graduated from St. Teresa’s Academy and went on to attend Fontbonne University in St. Louis, MO and receive her bachelor’s degree and then completed her master’s in special education.
Maggie lived an incredibly full life starting with her career in teaching special education for the Special School District of St. Louis County where she was dedicated to improving the learning abilities of children and determined to help them do their best. After teaching she moved to a career in human resources at Kansas City Power and Light where she exceled. At KCPL she made many friends within her colleagues. Maggie’s love of her work was associated with her love of the people she encountered and befriended. After retiring from KCP&L, Maggie pursued her hobby to become certified as a Master Gardener. In addition, to enjoying her hobbies, she also worked part time for Hallmark and volunteered her time as a board member and associate for the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet, served as a board member at St. Teresa’s Academy, and served as both vice president and treasurer of the Missouri Girls Town Club- South Area Kansas City Chapter.
In the past years, Maggie acted as a dear friend to her Aunt Jean Dunn where they spent quality time going go mass, praying together and shopping. Maggie had one of the kindest souls and was always truly genuine to all she loved and that was most evident in her love for her pets, especially her cats. Maggie never met a stray animal that she did not immediately welcome into her home. She had a gentle and loving heart for all her four-legged friends.
Maggie is preceded in death by her mother, Kathleen Aylward Mitchell, her father John Mitchell, her mother Mary Carol Mitchell, her dear sister Sr. Kathleen and her brother Michael “Mikey”. As well as many other family members including her niece, Jessica Sterner, her brother-in-law, Michael Phelps, her niece Lara Phelps Dwyer and her great niece Tierney Dwyer. Maggie is survived by her brother Joseph Sterner, wife Marilyn, her sister Mary Jo Phelps, partner Dave Lindley, and many nieces, nephews, great nieces, and great nephews that she loved dearly. She had many dear friends that she shared many wonderful times with including two of her closest friends, Kathleen McGinley, and Mary Mealy Maynard.
Visitation will be at 10:00am on Tuesday, January 11, 2022, at St. Thomas More, 11822 Holmes Rd, Kansas City, MO. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11:00am, and will be streamed at https://www.dignitymemorial.com/obituaries/kansas-city-mo/margaret-marie-mitchell-10518927. We respectfully request those attending the service please sit every other pew and wear masks at the service.
