He was born in 1928 in Kansas City, MO, to parents Rose (Presta) and Giovanni Blando. He lived in Kansas City his entire life, with the exception of a year in South Bend, IN and a year in Artesia, NM. He grew up in a large Sicilian-Calabrese family. Dr. Blando attended Manual High School, Rockhurst College and the Kansas City College of Osteopathic Medicine (now the University of Health Sciences). He retired from the VA Medical System in 1996.
A veteran of the Korean War, he was awarded the Korean Service Medal with two bronze service stars, the United Nations Service Medal and the National Defense Service Medal.
After several years as a family physician, Dr. Blando completed training in radiology and spent the remainder of his career as a highly skilled radiologist. Dr. Blando was preceded in death by his loving wife, Beverly (La Sala), his parents, Rose and Giovanni, his brother Anthony, and his sister, Mary Cambiano. He is survived by his son, Albert (Barbara), his granddaughter, Apollonia, and son John (Brian) as well as several members of his extended family. He is lovingly remembered by his family for his love of learning, his love of dogs and of dancing, which he did well into his 80s. His family was the most important part of his life and he expressed it with his bounteous generosity and support.
Per his wishes, his funeral and interment were a private, family affair at Resurrection Cemetery. Donations in his memory may be made to St. Jude Children’s Hospital (www.stjude.org) or the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (www.aspca.org).
Arrangements were made by McGilley Antioch Chapel in Kansas City, Missouri.
