Babe was born on January 21st, 1928 in Berwyn, IL. She attended the University of Kansas and the Art Institute of Kansas City studying under Frank Szasz, Mary Howell, Philomene Bennett and Lou Marak, and finished her degree in Art History at the University of Arizona.
Babe loved teaching her children and others how to sail and swim at Lake Lotawana, along with ice skating and boating. Her days were spent playing golf, tennis and bridge as a member of the Mission Hills Country Club. She also belonged to Country Club Christian Church, Gamma Phi Beta sorority, Missouri Yacht Club and the Kansas City Young Matrons.
Babe touched many people’s lives through her paint brush, using acrylic paint on canvas as her artistic medium. Her paintings grace the Kansas City public at Shadow Glen, Indian Hills and Mission Hills golf clubs, St. Luke’s and Menorah hospitals and various restaurants around town. "I enjoy the power and excitement of the brush, the way the paint moves on the canvas to create the form and essence of the flower – simplicity over confusion.”
Babe is preceded by husband Marvin E. Atha and children Jeffrey and Marylynn Atha. She is survived by children Alyson Platten and Andrew M. Atha, and grandchildren Jennifer Platten, Kristi Bowden, Alan A. Atha and Ashley Atha.
The family would like to express their gratitude for the love, compassion and care provided by Menorah Medical Center, The Sarah Cannon Cancer Institute of Leawood, Thoughtful Care, and Visiting Nurse Association during the last months of her life.
