Lane Rickard Ulmer passed away January 21, 2018 at the age of 91 years in Germantown, Tennessee.
Lane was born August 31, 1926 in Hopkins, Missouri where he lived as an only child on a farm with his parents. He joined the U.S. Army toward the end of WWII where he served his country on foreign soil for part of his tour of duty. Lane received his bachelor’s degree in education from Northwest Missouri State College and his master’s degree from the University of Missouri, Columbia. He married Anna Sue Wormsley of Polo, Missouri on June 4, 1950. They moved to Linn, Missouri, where Lane began teaching school and coaching high school baseball, basketball, and track. In 1953, their son Jeffery was born, and they moved to Kansas City, MO where Lane was an Industrial Arts teacher and coach at Boone Elementary School. Their family grew with the addition of their daughter Georgann in 1956. In 1958, he continued teaching Industrial Arts at the newly constructed Center South Junior High School. Lane was a dedicated educator his entire career, beloved by his students until he retired in 1987.
Lane was an active member of Colonial Presbyterian Church, serving as elder for a number of years. After his retirement, he loved to volunteer at church as well as Baptist Memorial Hospital. As his health began to decline, Lane moved to an assisted living facility in Germantown, TN, close to his daughter. He became a favorite among the staff and other residents with his good humor, grateful spirit, and ready smile. Lane attended Faith Presbyterian Church in Germantown. He loved Mizzou and Kansas City sports, but most of all, he loved his family. His life was characterized by devotion, honesty, and integrity. Lane will be missed by all who knew him, most notably, his loving family.
He was preceded in death by his parents Lane A. and Laverne Ulmer, and his dear wife of almost 60 years, Anna Sue Ulmer who died in 2009. He is survived by his son Jeffery Ulmer and wife Julie of Mena, AR, and his daughter Georgann Ulmer Patterson and husband Keith of Collierville, TN. He is also survived by three grandchildren and their spouses; Travis Ulmer and wife Emily of St. Louis, MO; Cameron Patterson and wife Cristina of Portland, OR; and Corinne Patterson Clark and husband Matt of Collierville, TN. He was very loved by his great-grandchildren; Owen, Molly, Jack, and Lucy Ulmer, all of St. Louis, MO.
Funeral services for Lane Ulmer will be held on Monday, January 29, 2018 at 11:00 AM at Colonial Presbyterian Church, 9500 Wornall Road, KCMO. Family visitation is Sunday, January 28th, 2018 from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM at Mt. Moriah, Funeral Home, 10507 Holmes Road, Kansas City, Missouri.
