As a young girl, Kay was a joyfully spirited blonde and a tremendous horseback rider. In 1955, Kay and her family moved from their “Oak Hill Pony Farm” in Dowagiac, Michigan to Overland Park, Kansas. Her parents are the late Marshall L. Doxsee, II; and the late Virginia Wiest Doxsee. Kay had one brother, Marshall L. Doxsee, III, and “sister-at-heart” Dee Ann Doxsee.
Kay is a graduate of Shawnee Mission High School, class of 1958. Making friends came easily to Kay, and with her warm heart and personality, lasting friendships followed her wherever she went! Her distinctive talent and unique beauty would take her to honorary status as a participant and one of five finalists in "The Miss Kansas City, Kansas Beauty Pageant," a subsidiary of The Miss Kansas Pageant.
Kay was a Member of St. Michaels' Episcopal Church where she served on the Altar Guild for many years. Kay married Victor C. Graf, and Vic adopted Karl, Kay’s son from her first marriage to become officially, Karl N. Graf. Vic had two children, whom Kay loved, Gary Graf and Vicki Graf. Together they "joined families as one." Together, the couple built a flourishing business in Merriam, Kansas, Vic Graf’s Gallery. After Vic's untimely death in 1984, Kay carried the flourishing business on until 2009 when she retired.
In 1986 Kay met and soon married the Best Drummer anywhere, her famously witted, warm and loving companion, John Doubleday. John was the owner and operator of Doubleday Coffee in Kansas City, Kansas, and once having met her was forever hers...and vice versa! John had two beautiful daughters, Robyn Mills and Denise Horak.
The couple had long anticipated fulfilling dreams of retirement, and found their Dream Home located in the Sienna Residential Estates in Las Vegas, Nevada, where they have lived happily in their desert villa, for the past three years.
Kay was an excellent Bridge Partner; graceful dancer, John’s number one Groupie, and the life of any party. She was a fun-filled-friend, who never said never and certainly, never, ever, veered away from a challenge! She fought and won a battle with breast cancer and supported annual endeavors for the cure… from runs, to fund raisers and moral support to all and any that incurred the hideous disease.
Kay was known not only for her beauty, but, additionally, qualities of honesty and integrity, fun-loving spirit; joyful personality, that could get brisk and tough, when necessary, initiate a competitive spirit when needed in the business world, yet congeniality; understanding and resourcefulness always prevailed. She was motivated by her enormous heart of giving and loving and thinking of, and putting others first.
She passed away Wednesday afternoon, April 17, 2019 during "Holy Week”. Her positive outlook at life and living continued to the end. She'd have celebrated her 34th wedding anniversary to her soul mate, John on May 3rd and would have turned seventy-nine years old May 7th, 2019.
