Visitation will be at 9:00 a.m. on Friday, September 15, at the Mt. Moriah, Newcomer & Freeman Funeral Home, 10507 Holmes Road, Kansas City, MO. Funeral services will follow, at the same location, beginning at 10:00 a.m. Burial will follow at the Corinth Cemetery. The family suggests contributions to the Red Bridge United Methodist Church in lieu of flowers.
Karl was born at home in Gower, Missouri on April 28, 1931 to Ivan McAlister Ellington and Maria Frances (Coates) Ellington. Karl graduated from Gower High School in 1949. He extended his education at Jr. College in Kansas City and completed many technical engineering courses. He was employed by Interstate Brands Corporation for 34 years, rising to the position of Associate Director of Engineering. In 1985, he formed Ellington Associates and served as a Manufacturing Representative for several packaging and material handling companies. He retired in 1999. He was a member of the Gower Lodge # 397, American Society of Bakery Engineers, and Red Bridge United Methodist Church in Kansas City, MO. Karl served on the Board of Trustees, Finance Committee, and the Church Council at Red Bridge United Methodist Church. Karl had also served as President of the following: Gladstone Jaycees, American-German Dance Club and the Compatible Investment Club. Karl was a JCI Senator, enjoyed serving with Midland United Methodist Cursillo and was Weekend Rector on MUMC # 37.
Karl and his loving wife, Dottie, enjoyed 36 years of lake living before returning full-time to Kansas City. Together, they taught their children, and grandchildren, how to enjoy both the lake and life in general. Karl also shared his love of scuba diving, water skiing, boating and being around the lake with his family and loved to travel. With his wife, and family members, he traveled to Alaska, Canada, Hawaii, Germany, Mexico, Switzerland, Holland, and the Bahamas as well as covering nearly all 50 states in his business career. Karl will be missed by all of his family and friends.
Karl was preceded in death by his wife of 43 years, Dottie Ellington; as well as his brother, I.M. (Jack) Ellington; his sisters, Lucille Donovan and Jeanie Ellington; both his parents, and great-grandchild Madelyn Webster.
Survivors include his two sons, Gary Ellington and wife Rita of Plattsburg, MO and Larry Ellington and wife Dayna of Liberty, MO; a stepson, Bob Webster and wife Kathey of Olathe, KS; a stepdaughter, Elaine Donovan and husband Daryl, of Sevierville, TN; and 10 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.
