She was born on September 10, 1950 in Kansas City, Missouri where she grew up near 26th and Quincy.
She graduated from East High School in Kansas City, Missouri and then went onto the University of Kansas where she earned Bachelor’s degrees in French and Psychology in 1972. While taking classes at the University of Missouri, Kansas City towards a Master’s degree in Education, she met the love of her life, Robert Stewart. They were married on August 11th, 1973. Together they built a wonderful life over the next 50 years. They moved to Grandview, Missouri to raise their family, eventually retiring in Lee’s Summit, Missouri.
Karen worked as the Medical Library Coordinator at Baptist Medical Center in Kansas City, Missouri. When she wasn’t working, Karen was spending time with family and her pets. After retirement, Karen was always planning her next trip to Destin, Florida with Robert. They would go down often and enjoy each other’s company, walking the beach, and going antique shopping.
She was preceded in death by her parents, William and Margie McCain .
She is survived by her husband Robert of 50 years, son Chad Stewart and wife Heather Hardinger, son Brett Stewart and wife Rebecca, two grandchildren Allison and Katherine, her sister Cheryl Koch and husband John, nephews Spencer and Avery and their families as well as her beloved dogs, Bear and Bella and her grand-dogs Balto, Sophie, Rocky, and Coco.

A memorial service will occur Wednesday, January 3, 2024 from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM, 10507 Holmes Road, Kansas City, MO 64131.
A private committal service for immediate family will occur at Mount Moriah Cemetery South, 10507 Holmes Road, Kansas City, MO 64131.
