John R. Whaley, age 85, passed away on September 8, 2016 at The Kansas City Hospice House. A lifetime Creighton Bluejay and Iowa State Cyclone fan, he spent his life in love with his wife of 57 years, Joann (Schmidt) who passed away in March of 2011.
He is survived by his six children, Kathy (Jim) Barsness, Iowa Falls, Iowa, Sue (John) Scott, Bay Village, OH, Martha (Jeff) Hemer, Overland Park, Kansas, Molly Whaley, Iowa City, Iowa, Matt (Maribeth) Whaley, Castle Rock, Colorado, and Mike (Meg) Whaley, Omaha, Nebraska. He leaves 14 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren.
He was a veteran who served in the United States Army. In 2000, he retired after a long career in business which included John Whaley Chevrolet in Carroll, Iowa and the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation. After retirement, John enjoyed 10 years of part- time employment with CVS Pharmacy in Overland Park, Kansas.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, September 16, 2016 at 10:00 AM, at St. John’s Parish on the campus of his alma mater, Creighton University, 2500 California Plaza, Omaha, Nebraska. Interment immediately to follow at Calvary Cemetery in Omaha, Nebraska.
