John Ernest Vincent, 92, died peacefully Sunday morning, August 29, 2010, after having a stroke earlier in the week. Memorial services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, September 1 at South-Broadland Presbyterian Church, 78th and Holmes, followed by a private graveside service for family only. A resident of John Knox Village, John is the son of the late William Ernest and Alice Vincent, and is survived by his wife of 70 years, Mary Teater Vincent, son Steve Vincent and his wife Marilyn of San Tan Valley, Arizona, daughter Jean Vincent Greeson and her husband Don of Hendersonville, North Carolina, four grandchildren—Scott Vincent, Jeffrey Vincent, Jill Tran, and Mark Bailey, five step-grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Before serving in the Army as an infantry commander in New Guinea, the Philippines, and occupied Japan during and just after World War II, John graduated from Ft. Leavenworth Command and General Staff College. After the war, he continued his service as colonel and commandant of the U.S. Army Reserve School for Western Missouri. John worked in management for Hallmark Cards for 45 years, and after retiring became President of the Hallmark Retirement Club. He married his life partner in 1940, and over the years traveled with her throughout the United States and 100 countries. In later years, John became active in John Knox Village, serving as President of its Residential Council. All who knew him considered him both a gentleman and gentle man.
