John Shields Savage

John Shields Savage was born in Kansas City, Missouri on December 14, 1922. He graduated from Central High School and after high school, John was enlisted into the Army for WWII. He served with the 5th Air Force, 376th Service Squadron, 63rd Service Group, APO 713 Unit One, in the South Pacific as an Aircraft Frame and Sheet Metal Specialist. He had many stories of his meeting “Pappy” Boyington.

After the war, he earned his credentials as a framing carpenter. He attended and graduated from Findley Engineering College. John had a wide-spread reputation for his ability in design and metal fabrication.

He was an inventor and problem solver. At the age of 92, he still had his Class A truck driver’s license.

John was a businessman. He opened Dual-Fuel in 1976, supplying a device that he developed for the construction industry. John married Jeannette in 1977 and together they opened Our Doll Land in 1983. John remained as a freelance consultant, designer, and fabricator until health issues forced him to slow down at the age of 90.

John passed away in Warrensburg, MO on July 16, 2019. He was preceded in death by his parents, Vickery Haines and Velma Pearl (Blaine) Savage; his wife of 20 years, Jeannette Sue; two sisters, Betty Jean Miller and Mary Francis Thompson and a nephew, Bill Thompson.

Though he had no children of his own, he was blessed with a step-daughter, Lark (Gary) Blankenship, and four step-sons, Arthur "Tom" (Terry) Williams, Charles "Tim" Williams (who preceded John in death), Daniel "Ted" Williams, and Bruce (Laura) Staley. He had 15 grandchildren and 21 great grandchildren.

John will be truly missed.

The visitation and funeral will be held Monday 22, 2019 at McGilley and Sheil Funeral Home Chapel at 11924 E 47th, Kansas City, MO. Visitation at 9:00 AM with Funeral Service beginning at 10:00 AM. Interment at Leavenworth National Cemetery, 150 Muncie Rd, Leavenworth, KS, graveside service at 1:30 PM.
