

Dr. John Patrick McCalla, 89 of Kansas City, MO died May 1, 2015. He was born June 12, 1925 to Charles V. and Kathryn Moore McCalla. He grew up in Nodaway Co. Missouri near Burlington, Jct. and Maryville. He attended the local schools. He was a World War II veteran of the US Navy Hospital Corps. He graduated from Rockhurst College, received his Doctor of Medicine degree from Creighton University and completed a residency in Anesthesiology at UMKC. He spent five years in family practice, and was for several years Director of the Jackson County Health Department, and an attending physician at the old Jackson County Hospital. Following this, he was an anesthesiologist for thirty years, retiring from North Kansas City Hospital in 1987. He was a member of the American Legion, Navy League, Ancient Order of the Hibernians, Associate of the Police Emerald Society and belonged to several professional organizations. He volunteered on the Human Subjects Committee of Midwest Research Institute and was an auxiliary volunteer in Crime Prevention in the KCMO Police Dept. and a member of the Police Care Team. He was a former member of the Pontifical Choir, St. Augustine Choir and Our Lady of Fatima Choir. He married Catherine M. Donnici in Holy Rosary Church in 1959.
John was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his wife Catherine; four children, Charles McCalla of Boston, MA, Alan and wife Mary Margaret of KCMO, Kathleen Bartelli and husband Phil of Raytown, MO, and Susan McCalla of KCMO; grandchildren Michael, Nick, Tony and Danny Bartelli, Katie, Annie and Meghan McCalla and three great grandchildren. He had a special love for the S.M. Frey family of Galveston Island for kindness to him during and since Navy duty there in 1945. He considered Galveston his “other home”. In retirement, he enjoyed being with Catherine, the children and grandchildren, friends and his volunteer work, gardening and “the farm”. He took great comfort in his faith.
Visitation will be Thursday, May 7 from 4-6 p.m. at the McGilley Midtown Chapel, 20 W. Linwood Blvd, KCMO, where the rosary will be prayed at 5:30. Mass of Christian Burial will be 9:00 a.m. Friday, May 8 at Redemptorist Fathers Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church, 3333 Broadway, KCMO. Private burial will at a later date.
