John served four years in the Army during World War II in Louisiana, China and India. He received four Bronze Stars in the 127th Signal Radio Intelligence Company and the Marksmen’s Medal. John graduated from the KC Art Institute in 1950 where he received the Logan Watercolor Prize.
He taught art at Paseo High School, Hallmark, Bingham Junior High School and 19 years at Longview Community College (38 years total). John painted with ten artist friends, known as the Fred James Groupe, every weekend for 25 years. He painted in France, Italy, Mexico, Martha’s Vineyard, and all over Missouri and Kansas.
John was buried in Hutchinson, KS. A celebration of his life for family and friends will be held on Saturday, March 18, 2017 from 1:00 to 4:00 pm at Mt Moriah, Newcomer & Freeman Funeral Home, 10507 Holmes Rd., Kansas City, Missouri, where attendees will be encouraged to recount their favorite story about John.
