A native of Albion, Nebraska, John was born September 7, 1924, in Omaha. In 1946, he graduated with a B.S. in business administration from the University of Nebraska, Lincoln, where he was a member of the Kappa Sigma fraternity. In 1947, he joined the staff of the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency, the federal bank regulatory bureau of the U.S. Department of the Treasury, and received his national bank examiner’s commission in 1955. He married Sally Krause of Albion in 1957.
In 1968, the Comptroller of the Currency appointed John regional administrator of the four-state OCC region headquartered in Kansas City, Missouri, a position he held until his retirement in 1981. For his exceptional supervision of the 502 national banks in his region, John received a Meritorious Service Award from the Secretary of the Treasury in 1975.
From 1981 to 1988, John held a seven-year term on the board of trustees of the P.E.O.-owned Cottey College, Nevada, Missouri, serving as chairman in 1986–87. The executive board of the International Chapter of the P.E.O. recognized John’s outstanding board leadership with a Resolution of Appreciation in 1988.
A dedicated family man and a lifelong fan of Nebraska Cornhuskers football, John will be deeply missed by his family and the many people whose lives he touched with his kindness and generosity.
John’s father and mother, Roy and Gertrude Burt, of Albion, preceded him in death. He is survived by his wife, Sally, of Kansas City; daughter Sarah Burt of Great Falls, Montana; daughter Carol Cheek and husband Bruce of Lake Saint Louis, Missouri; daughter Martha Burt of Roeland Park, Kansas; daughter Jennie Burt of Prairie Village, Kansas; grandchildren-in-law Rachel and Kyle Laramie and their children Drew and Blake of Lake Saint Louis.
Memorial services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, January 28, at Unity Temple on the Plaza, 707 West 47th Street, Kansas City, Missouri. Visitation will be from 5:30 -7:30 p.m., Friday, January 27, 2012, at McGilley State Line Chapel.
