John Andrade Jr. peacefully passed away on February 20, 2024, at the age of 77, in Olathe, KS. John was born in Fall River, MA and raised in Bristol, RI. He was raised by his mother, Mary, and was a dear brother to his sister Angie. John left Rhode Island after attending junior college to pursue a four-year degree in Education at Central Missouri State University (now UCM) where he later earned his Master of Curriculum and Instruction. John’s life’s work was dedicated to education, government, and public service. He began his career by sharing his passion in the classroom as a high school history teacher and later served as a legislative liaison, community activist, and volunteer. Some of his most treasured moments were working with U.S. Senator Thomas Eagleton, meeting President Jimmy Carter, volunteering on the Olathe library board, and his time with the city of Olathe, KS, where he met many treasured friends.
John’s ultimate legacy is the love and support he exemplified as a husband, father, and grandpa. His favorite moments were spent with his family. He enjoyed traveling, attending his grandsons’ sporting events, and partaking in “food, family and fun,” as he would say. John is survived by his beloved wife Valerie Andrade of Olathe, KS; daughter Joy Hopke of Belton, MO, and son-in-law William Hopke; daughter Joni Harrell of Lee’s Summit, MO, son-in-law Rick Harrell, and his pride and joy, two grandsons, Colin Harrell and Chase Harrell; step-daughter Karen Ramsey of Dallas, TX, and son-in-law Tim Ramsey.
John was preceded in death by his parents John and Mary (Soares) Andrade; sister Evangelina “Angie” (Andrade) Martin; brother-in-law Herman Martin; and granddaughter Alexis Loree Hopke.
John’s life impact was profound, touching the lives of many individuals. He made sure that people felt heard and seen. John loved big and his love was felt every day of his life.
A visitation will be held on Monday, February 26, 2024 from 6:00-8:00 pm, to share condolences with the family, at McGilley State Line Chapel, 12301 State Line Road, Kansas City, MO 64145.
