She was born on October 17, 1929 in Springfield, Missouri where she grew up until her move to Kansas City in 1952 upon her marriage to Charles T. Moore, also from Springfield.
Joann graduated from Springfield High School in 1947 and graduated from University of Missouri Kansas City in 1958 with a BA degree in education and was also a member of the Alpha Sigma Alpha Sorority. Joann was an elementary school teacher beginning at Boone Elementary in the Center School District of Kansas City, and eventually became a long-term teacher in Hickman Mills’ Consolidated School District #1 at Warford Elementary School where she retired. While at Warford Elementary School, Joann gained many lifelong friends that continue through today.
Joann was actively involved in the Alpha Sigma Alpha Sorority and Missouri Retired Teachers Association (MRTA). She was an active participant in her favorite card game of Bridge at the Lee’s Summit Gamber Community Center.
Joann was preceded in death by her parents, Ray and Emily Hughes (McGiboney); her husband, Charles Moore; and eldest son Fred Moore.
Joann is survived by her son, Rusty of the home; her daughter, Marcia Bartch; her granddaughters, Kristin, Dana, and Emily Bartch; her sister-in-law Mary Harp (Norman); her cousins, Musa Pyle and Theresa Pyle; the entire Stracke Family of Springfield, MO; lifelong friends, Martha Mangan of Santa Cruz, CA, and Sally Thoreson of Lee’s Summit, MO; a multitude of cousins and friends; and her bestest furry bud Skipper.
Joann was a very social person who always made friends whenever and wherever she went and traveled to.
The family would like to thank Village Hospice Care of Lee’s Summit for the care and compassion they showed our loved one in her final days. The nurses, especially Dana Northington, and all those involved with her care, are very much appreciated for their dedication to the sick.
Family and friends are invited to attend the funeral service of Joann at Mt. Moriah, Newcomer & Freeman Funeral Home, 10507 Holmes Road, Kansas City, MO. 64131 on Friday, September 20, 2024. Visitation with the family will begin at 10:00 AM with service at 11:00 AM. Interment to follow at Mount Moriah Cemetery South at the same location. Joann will join her husband Charles, who passed in 2001.
