James R. Nelson Jr., known as Jim to his family and friends, passed away peacefully on December 22nd, 2024, at the age of 67. Born on January 21, 1957, to James R. Nelson Sr. and Bernardine Steck Nelson. Jim was a lifelong resident of Kansas City, Missouri whose warmth and kindness touched many.
Jim attended Christ the King School, where he began forming the foundations of his strong character. He later graduated from Rockhurst High School in 1975.
In July of 1979, Jim married the love of his life, Kimberly Tesche Nelson. Their love story was blessed with two sons, Mike and Rick, who were the pride and joy of Jim's life. Jim spent his professional life as an optician at Gerry Optical, where his dedication and expertise were widely recognized until his retirement in 2020.
Jim's passion for his community was evident through his selfless volunteer work, particularly his years of service as a coach and as Athletic Director at Christ the King. His commitment to fostering young talent and encouraging a love for sports left a lasting impact on many young athletes. He and Kim also taught the premarital classes for the church.
Jim is survived by his devoted wife, Kim; his sons, Mike (Maggie) and Rick (Carissa); his beloved grandson, Carter, and granddaughter, Maryn; his stepmother, Joan Nelson Bow; his sisters, Carol Mitchell and Donna Morley; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Tim.
A visitation will be held at Mt. Moriah, Newcomer & Freeman Funeral Home at 105th and Holmes on Thursday, January 2nd from 6-8 PM. A funeral mass will follow on Friday, January 3rd at 9 AM at Christ the King Church on 85th and Wornall Rd. Burial Mount Moriah Cemetery South.
Jim's legacy of love, kindness, and dedication will forever be cherished by his family and friends. He will be deeply missed but never forgotten.
