Jim was born on November 16, 1936, in Wahpeton, North Dakota. He was the third of five children born to Olaf and Gladys Carlson. He graduated from Wahpeton High School. When Jim was 17, he left Wahpeton with his uncle Andy Anderson and came to Kansas City to work in the roofing business. Here, he met Patricia Ann Marek. They married and had three children. Jim and Pat later divorced and Jim met and married Connie Doran. She had three children and together they had a son. They settled in Independence, Missouri where they raised their family.
Jim was a quiet man, and he had a great love for his family. His main hobby was woodworking, of which he was quite skilled. He was a perfectionist. He also loved working on his yard and spending an evening with his wife listening to country music and drinking a beer. His favorite TV show was Gunsmoke. He also loved riding his ATV and watching the Chiefs.
He was preceded in death by his parents, sister Marlene Wirtenberger, brother Richard Carlson, nephew Bradley Carlson and brother-in-law Jim Jacobson.
His wife Connie Carlson survived Jim. Children, Linda (Jose) Rodriguez, Victoria McKown, James Allen (Eileen) Carlson, Jr., Daniel J. Carlson, Sr., Kelly Doran and Randy Doran. His grandchildren, Joseph Rodriguez, Shaun (Katie) Rodriguez, Matthew Rodriguez, Alex Rodriguez, Russell (Stephanie) McKown, Bradley McKown, Audra (Kenny) Elliott, Sarah Young Longworth, Janelle (Mike) Maynard, James Allen Carlson III, Jennifer (Vance) Hedrick, Amie Rodriguez, Daniel (Emily) Carlson Jr., Danielle (James) Deaver, Joseph Doran, Kristopher Doran and Jordan Lindon. Great Grandchildren, Graham Rodriguez, Claire Rodriguez, Isabelle Rodriguez, Trey McKown, Sadie Martin, Lincoln Boucher, Henry Longworth, Finn Longworth, Elijah Maynard, Elaina Maynard, Landen Davis, Vinnie Hedrick, Addie Hedrick, Selena Rodriguez, Sophia Rodriguez, Lorenzo Rodriguez, Gianna Carlson, Paisley Deaver, Preston Deaver, Cloe Deaver, Remi Doran, Sophia Doran, Camren Martin and Cash Mckown. A visitation for James will be held Monday, July 17, 2023, from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM at McGilley & Sheil Funeral Home, 11924 East 47th Street, Kansas City, Missouri 64133. A funeral service will occur Tuesday, July 18, 2023, at 10:00 AM, at the funeral home. A committal service will occur at Woodlawn Cemetery, 701 S Noland Rd, Independence, Missouri 64050.
