Jack "Pappy" Bridges departed his earthly vessel on Thursday, October 31, 2024, to embark on his journey to heaven. His transition was peaceful, with the assistance of his incredible hospice team, embraced by loved ones surrounding his bedside, just as he had lived – wrapped in the warmth of God's love and those that cherished him most.
Pappy was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 69 years, Johnny Ann. He is survived by his loving daughters, Janna Bridges and Joleen Halloran (Greg Belcher). His legacy continues through his cherished grandchildren: Shanna Halloran, Brett Jansen (Travis Jansen), and Jackson Walker, as well as his adored great-grandchildren: Breanna Hays, Gabriel Hays, Jacklyn Hays, and Declan Jansen.
A retired Air Force Major, Jack's nearly life-long career serving his country cemented the seeds of patriotism and a fierce dedication to defending the Constitution – values that he instilled into his entire family. His faith as a Christian Scientist provided a grounding force and guided his gentle, compassionate approach to all.
Jack received his associate’s degree in economics from the University of Kansas City, Missouri, and built a distinguished career as a sales executive, pioneering technology for machining equipment.
Known affectionately as "Pappy," Jack was the cherished patriarch of a family that was his greatest joy and pride. His legacy lives on through the countless lives he touched with his infectious laugh, warm smile, and legendary "Pappy hugs" that made everyone feel special.
Pappy's devotion to his family, especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, knew no bounds. Pappy transformed ordinary moments into magical memories – from thrilling trips to World of Fun and haunted houses to faithfully shuttling his grandchildren to and from dance classes, orchestra and choir concerts. His commitment to supporting his family’s pursuits even led him to take the stage as the Priest in Lee’s Summit High School’s production of “The Sound of Music”, attending every rehearsal to support his granddaughters in the show. Jack was exceptionally proud of his grandson Jackson, who is currently serving as a Lieutenant Cybersecurity Warfare Officer in the United States Navy, carrying forward his grandfather’s patriotic spirit and dedication to service.
A lover of Broadway shows and patriot at heart, Pappy approached life with a rare combination of wisdom, joy, and fearlessness. His jovial spirit and non-judgmental nature made him not just a grandfather, but a best friend to his daughters, grandchildren and their friends alike. He participated wholeheartedly in their lives, even joining the fathers' dances at Monica School of Dance, proving that age was no barrier to creating special moments with those he loved.
The pool was Pappy's second home, where his vitality shone brightest. Well into his later years, he could be found doing several dozen laps, but his greatest joy came from carrying his grandchildren and great-grandchildren on his back through the water, teaching each one how to swim with patience and encouragement. His expertise as a pilot brought a unique perspective to teaching his granddaughters how to drive, turning each lesson into an adventure filled with wisdom and careful instruction.
Those who knew Pappy couldn't help but be drawn to his presence. His ability to bring out the best in others was a gift that touched everyone around him, from family members to the dedicated healthcare team who cared for him in his final days. He was always there – whether you were battling the flu, nursing a broken heart, or simply needed someone to provide hugs and a shoulder to cry on without judgment. His home was a sanctuary where comfort, wisdom, and unconditional love were always in abundance.
Pappy's greatest achievement was the love he gave and inspired in others. His stubborn determination to live life fully, his generous heart, and his gentle soul created a legacy of love that will continue to influence generations to come. He showed us ALL how to live with purpose and find joy in life’s precious moments.
In his final days, just as throughout his life, Pappy remained a warrior for his family – strong, loving, and surrounded by the music and people he loved most. His passing leaves an immense void, but his spirit lives on in the countless lives he touched and the family he loved so dearly.
