Helen Stockham died of natural causes in her sleep on December 22, 2018 at The Groves in Independence, MO. Helen was born April 22, 1921 in Kansas City, to William and Elizabeth Stratemeier and spent most of her life in the Kansas City area. Helen attended Raytown High School and nursing school at Kansas City General Hospital, graduating in 1944. She served as a nurse in California attending to WWII soldiers. She then worked as a registered nurse at several KC area hospitals, including St. Joseph’s, St. Luke’s, and Independence Regional. Helen married Cecil Stockham in 1949 and they had three children together. Helen was a member of St. Peter’s United Church of Christ and as a church volunteer delivered flowers to elderly shut-ins. Since 2011, Helen was a resident at The Groves assisted living facility.
Helen loved to quilt, sew, knit, play games, and garden. Dominoes and crossword puzzles were a weekly ritual that she enjoyed with her family.
Helen is predeceased by her mother, father, brother Richard, and sisters Mildred, Martha, and Margaret.
Helen is survived by her sister, Marilyn King of Independence, MO, her children, Janet Duncan and her husband Michael Duncan of Kansas City, MO, Gary Stockham of Shawnee, KS, and Elaine Schall of Severna Park, MD, and her three grandchildren, Hilary Duncan, Danielle Schall, and Gabe Duncan.
Visitation will be at 1 pm and the funeral will be at 2 pm on Friday, December 28 at the Newcomer’s Floral Hills Funeral Home, 7000 Blue Ridge Blvd, Kansas City, MO 64133, 816-353-1218.
