Glenn was born in 1937 in Jamestown, Missouri, the second child of William and Mildred Schwab. When Glenn was two years old, the family moved to Greenwood, Missouri. While growing up on the family farm, Glenn participated in 4H, raising calves and steers, showing in county fairs and at the American Royal.
He graduated with the Class of 1955 from Lee’s Summit High School. He attended the University of Missouri where he majored in food technology, participated in ROTC, and was a member of the Alpha Gamma Rho fraternity. Following graduation, he attended the United States Army Airborne School at Fort Benning, GA as a captain. He returned to the University of Missouri and earned his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine in 1964.
Glenn apprenticed with Dr. William Stuart in the summers while in veterinary school, and upon graduation joined Dr. Stuart as a partner. Doctors Stuart and Schwab enjoyed a thriving practice of large and small animal medicine across decades, first at 135th Street near State Line Road, and later the partners built a new clinic at 135th Street and Switzer Road. Glenn specialized in equine health and cared for small animals as well. Although his clinics were in Johnson County, Glenn drove to barns throughout the region, available on-call to his clients day or night for emergencies and to deliver foals, calves, puppies and kittens. Glenn practiced veterinary medicine for 48 years. When he retired in 2013 he missed his clients, who were all very loyal.
Glenn and Molly were married April 20, 1976 and had one daughter together, Wendy. The family lived in the southernmost part of Leawood, Kansas when it was still farmland. As the area around them developed, Glenn and Molly established River Trail Farm in Stilwell Kansas in 1990, doing much of the work to prepare the land to build their home and barn. The couple maintained the farm themselves and had great fun working together in all seasons. Much of River Trail Farm is now part of the The Nature Conservancy for the preservation of the Blue River. Glenn called it “his lake place.”
Glenn loved caring for and driving his vintage Corvette and took pride in passing it on to his son in pristine condition. Glenn enjoyed motorcycles which he rode throughout the years. In his seventies, he cherished long solo rides on his Harley Davidson, exploring the back highways from eastern Kansas to Nebraska and south to Oklahoma.
Glenn will be remembered for his wry sense of humor, an easygoing nature, a deep work ethic, his compassion for animals, and his love for the landscape of Missouri and Kansas where he spent his life.
Glenn is preceded in death by his parents and his sister Shirley Ann Draheim. In addition to his wife, Molly, and daughter Wendy Brodhead (David), Glenn leaves his son, John William Schwab (Abby), daughter Suzanne Lynne Delaney (Dan), Matthew Harrison Smith (Tracey), Bedonna Hayes Smith (Thomas Rotert), and nine grandchildren.
