Geraldine Mary Kerwin, 91, Kansas City North, passed away November 3, 2010 at North Kansas City Hospital. She was born February 1, 1919 in St. Louis, MO, the eldest child of Elmer H. and Rose (LaMear) Black. Geraldine was preceded in death by her husband, William Kerwin, Jr. in 1985; her grandsons, James Hunt McCormick and Kerwin Matthew Nelles, her great-grandson, Jack Kerwin Vowiell; and three sisters, Rosemary “Pat” Mathys, Joan Mueller and Mary Nichols, also preceded her in death. Her one surviving sister is Jane Carlton, St. Louis. Additional survivors include her children, Myra McCormick, Nancy Kerwin (Mike Morgan), Kay Schembri (Sam), William Kerwin III (Barbara), all of Kansas City, MO, Dr. Joseph Kerwin (Cathy), Springfield, MO and John Kerwin, Colorado Springs, CO. Her surviving grandchildren are Michael McCormick, Patrick McCormick (Jenny), Daniel McCormick (Jen), Kristen Miller (Danny), Emily Vowiell, Chad Schembri, Sean Schembri, Mia Schembri, Erin Stipanovich (Ted), Amy Kerwin, Rachel Kerwin, and Kelly Kerwin. She also leaves 12 great-grandchildren who brightened her final years of life.
Geraldine was extremely proud of her six children and all of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Her apartment at The Gardens on Barry Road was adorned with photographs of her family. She needed very little coaxing to brag about their many accomplishments. She was proud of her St. Louis heritage as well and loved to share fond memories of having lived there much of her life. She was known for her sense of style and fashion and her love of sweets. Her family thanks all who cared for her and who made her life comfortable to the end.
The Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:00 AM Monday, November 8th at St. Patrick Catholic Church, 1357 NE 42nd Terrace, Kansas City, MO 64116 where a visitation will begin at 9:00 AM. Burial will be at 12:30 PM Monday in the Leavenworth National Cemetery, Leavenworth, KS. The family suggest memorial contributions to CCVI, 3101 Main, Kansas City, MO 64111, to The Accessible Arts, 1100 State Avenue, Kansas City, KS 66102 or to the St. Patrick Educational Fund, 1357 NE 42nd Terrace, Kansas City, MO 64116.
